Stop the Madness

There is no enlightenment at the end of a pose. Actually, there is no end to these poses. It seems to me in a general sense we as a society are enamored with the mystical, mysterious, the unseen & unknown. We are looking for the hidden teaching, the secret scroll or fountain of youth, and of course heaven and hell.

NEW: On the Mat

It’s difficult to be a spark amidst a rain shower. The spark is drowned out. Yet if many, many sparks join, you have a strong flame which will be much more difficult to be drowned out.

A PowerYoga Birth Story

Came to L.A. over a decade ago.......I was alone, completely alone, no friends or family. I began to build my own relationships; there was this group of amazing, funny, fit women I started to hang with; they had this ritual of Bryan's 10:45am class.

Deepening Your Practice

How is your yoga practice going? Has it left the yoga mat yet? In this country it is very common for our yoga practice to begin with the physical. Yet, as we benefit, and desire to increase the benefits, we notice that all the ways to deepen the practice address our mind. So in order to access the next level of wellness we need to address the mental state.

Who are you?

What are you about?
Who are you?
What do you want to be about?
Why do you want what you want?
This may lead you to what you really want.

The Church of Bryan Kest

Who knows what caused my breast cancer. Diet? I don’t think so; I eat better compared to most. Lack of exercise? Absolutely not! I am fitter now than when I was twenty-five. The stress from taking my production job too seriously? Not having children and breast feeding? The environmental pollutants in the atmosphere? The hormone replacement pills I took nine years ago? The whole stream of crappy boyfriends who I willingly allowed into my life over the past ten years – Don’t forget to breathe! The deepest richest breath spilling through my nostrils.

Donation: the Act of Giving

Donation does not mean free. As stated above, donation means: the act of giving.

Quality of Practice

Awareness of breathing is our top priority. For this to happen, we need focus. We need to focus: move away from all thoughts and distraction in order to pay attention to what we are doing. In doing this, we give our brain a little rest from the constant influx of our normal, redundant, unnecessary thoughts that are incessantly passing through our brain, mostly distracting us from what we are experiencing and contributing to the mental stresses we create.

About Yoga: Taking a Look

A fitness routine based on aesthetics feeds your ego, not your spirit. By increasing your ego, you actually become more vulnerable, more susceptible to the everyday occurrences that are out of your control.

Yoga Etiquette

Welcome to the Rat Race. Although somehow we seem to just barely keep this phenomenon we've created called "modern society" from exploding, imploding or simply toppling over, the effort it requires, takes an enormous toll on our minds, bodies and spirits. If you live in or near a city or not, you can't really avoid the rat race.

Bryan's Thoughts on Power Yoga

In Response to the question: What is Power Yoga?... Actually, what we are doing is not yoga. Because of the nature of yoga, it cannot be anything one does - not asanas (poses), meditation, not anything. Yoga is the state of mind or state of being while performing the asana, pratayama, meditation, or any other endeavor.

Yoga Speak: Glossary of Sanskrit Words

You may be in a yoga class and hear the teacher using Sanskrit words for yoga poses (asanas) and concepts (Bryan's phrase for "any dimwit can jam themselves deeper"). We thought you might find this list helpful in translating some of the more commonly used terms.

Hot Topics

My Response to the article "Why National Yoga Certification Standards is a Bad Idea"... Although I can understand some positive rationale for this group "The Yoga Alliance" (who are these people?) to be expending their energy in this manner, I find myself whole heartedly in agreement with White Lotus and friends.

Karma Yoga

Dear Friends, in case you are not aware, charity work is a large part of our center. At least two Monday morning class proceeds each month go to "A Place Called Home," a sanctuary and accredited alternative learning center in the heart of South Central Los Angeles.

Health Benefits of Yoga

The easiest way to understand this difficult subject is to picture our central nervous system as a building with a lot of electrical wires. The wires don't do a whole lot, but plug in a television, and for some people, their entire world has miraculously changed.

Spinal Health

Welcome to spinal strengthening. Eight years ago I suffered an injury to my spine in a car accident. Since then, a lot of my yoga practice has been working with my injury. I feel I've made some pretty important discoveries in working with my back injury, and I want to pass on that information to you.

Weight Loss: Food, Diet and Addiction

Every yoga practice, we all work so hard on healing, releasing, creating and maintaining balance. We are practicing ideas and principles that ultimately need to transcend the classroom and permeate our life in order for us to really benefit. I'd like to talk (what's new) here about my feeling on how this pertains to a huge aspect of our life: Food!
